Overview
B.B. Crowninshield, scion of an important New England maritime family and a forebear of the North Haven Saltonstall/Lewis/Hammond clan, designed this elegant craft 17½ foot wooden craft in 1908. With its streamlined bow and stern uplifted, and slender form skimming low in the water, its handling is as graceful as its looks. The Knockabout was the preferred large North Haven racing boat for years, until nosed aside by the more practical maintenance considerations of Ensign’s fiberglass hull. Several Casino families still adore them for pleasure, and include them in the longer races. The Casino hosted a special Knockabout regatta last August (2010), which drew participants from Dark Harbor and Rockport — a magnificent sight to behold.
